Public Programs and Special Events

Lectures, workshops, performances, artists' talks, screenings, educational programs create a forum on contemporary aesthetic, social, political and cultural issues. Through their inter-disciplinary nature, The New Gallery's events bring topical issues to a broader audience. See our upcoming events

Resource Centre

Since its inception, The New Gallery has subscribed to current arts periodicals and collected catalogues through exchange programs with other artist-run centres and galleries. Our long history has allowed us to develop a unique collection of material with a focus on emerging Canadian artists and artist-run culture.

Artist-in-residence (AiR)

Nurturing the creative process by providing both the time and space necessary for work without interruption, this unique program permits in-depth involvement in a project during the month of August. As the only live-in artist residency currently being offered in Calgary, it functions as a catalyst for learning and it’s inner city location fosters an enhanced awareness of the arts in society.

Artist Trading Cards

ATCs are part of an effort to increase the public's acceptance of art as an aspect of daily life, and to encourage artistic production not just consumption. ATCs encourage Calgarians, regardless of background, to become active in the local arts community. TNG began supporting ATCs in 1997 and continues to support its activities by hosting Trading Card Sessions on the last Saturday of each month from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and by promoting ATCs provincially, with a touring ATC exhibition and workshop program through The Alberta Society of Artists (ASA) as part of Alberta Foundation of the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (AFATEP).

First Thursdays

On the first Thursday of every month, arts venues, restaurants and retailers in and near Calgary's Cultural District stay open late and offer a mix of special activities, many of them free or discounted. Activities include gallery openings, meet-the-artist events, theatre, dance, readings, talks, tours, street happenings and food and wine-tastings. First Thursday goers can sample any number of events, start as early as breakfast and stay as late as 2am, all within blocks of Olympic Plaza.

TNG participates in First Thursdays by being open until 9 PM.

Professional Development

A new initiative by TNG connects two institutions the Alberta College of Art and Design, and the art dept. of the University of Calgary with an exhibition curated by a senior art student of the work by students from another institution. The process is facilitated by gallery staff and a professional curator. The purpose of this project is to foster new relationships with future artists, curators, writers and administrators, as well as to offer a professional mentoring opportunity that is not available elsewhere in Calgary. This program occurs annually in February.
