Guidelines/Eligibility:
The New Gallery is now accepting residency proposals from individual artists and collectives in all disciplines, for research and development of new or ongoing bodies of work. Proposals that are collaborative and/or multi-disciplinary in nature are strongly encouraged. In the spirit of esteemed Calgary artist John Snow, who was involved in a broad range of artistic activities, TNG seeks proposals which indicate new directions for the applicant(s), including the investigation of new media.
Previously home to the University of Calgary’s Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program, the John Snow House (JSH) has already hosted distinguished writers-in-residence Timothy Findlay and Michael Ondaatje, amongst others – and artists/curators who require time to write, research and retreat are also encouraged to apply.

JSH is municipally zoned to permit public events and applicants may consider this in their proposal, including suggestions for workshops, presentations, screenings or other creative on-site programming. However applicants should also bear in mind that the house is a designated historic resource in a quiet, residential neighborhood.
Fees:
TNG Artists in Residence are not charged fees nor paid a stipend. All travel, material and living costs are the sole responsibility of the selected participant(s). Travel grants may be available from federal and/or provincial or territorial arts granting bodies. The New Gallery will assume all costs associated with use of the house as a living space while the AiR is present.
Applicants are asked to take the limited financial resources of TNG into account, but also consider the wide-ranging possibilities of this unique urban residential setting. JSH exists as a staffed archive and resource centre as well, so proposals that address the collection are encouraged; selected artists may also be eligible for special access to the archives and research guidance, at the discretion of the JSH Director. The JSH Director is also responsible for yard work and general maintenance of the house, but is not a housekeeper.
Selection Process:
As with all of TNG's programming, the
Artist in Residence will be selected by our peer Programming Jury. In the
interest of both democratizing and administratively streamlining the submission
review process, TNG Programming Selection Committee ONLY accepts proposals

TNG does not require letters of reference, although with permission from the applicant, we may contact organizations with which the applicant has had shows, residencies or other affiliations.
The residency will take place in August 2013, for either part or all of the month. Please include a brief timeline with your proposal and indicate how long you wish to be in residence.
Facilities:
The historic John Snow House (JSH) is located at 915 -18 Avenue SW, in the residential community of Lower Mount Royal – offering easy access to the downtown core, public transit, grocery stores, restaurants, medical services, banks and all other amenities. Originally built in 1912 and renovated in 1959-61 (with a studio addition by Maxwell Bates) and again in the 2000’s, the house is a fully functional residence which includes a fenced back yard (with a small garden and composting area) and patio, front porch, two upstairs bedrooms (one with ensuite bathroom), a spacious living room, a full kitchen, and laundry room. WiFi access is also available. As the AiR, you will share the main floor of the house with the JSH Director. The washroom on the main floor is also a shared space. The small studio space addition at the back of the house may be available as shared workspace if appropriate, at the discretion of the JSH Director, whose office is situated there. The studio space is not suited to working with power tools, nor extremely messy or large productions.
JSH is a lovely example of working class housing, originally intended for Canadian Pacific Rail employees in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. TNG also has an agreement with a local bike rental organization, so the AiR has free access to bike transportation if desired. Climate in Calgary in August can be cool in the evenings, but very pleasant during the day. August is probably the most beautiful time to spend in this city, as temperatures peak in July and August to about 25°C / 77°F.
